Trends I Love… Plus Size Scuba Dress
In the past few fashion seasons we have seen an unexpected fabrication make its way back into our fashion hearts after its 80’s takeover, creating a hot plus size fashion trend that we simply cannot ignore {even if you try}. Neoprene or “scuba” first became a wearable fabrication in the 1950’s when two surfer brothers used the fabric to design the modern wet suit {hence the name scuba}, and create Body Glove- the iconic sportswear brand of the 1980’s… {check out this awesome article on the history of neoprene}. This fabrication has literally gone from refrigerator insulation to chic RTW fashion in tops, skirts, and pants, and of course- the plus size scuba dress!
The beauty of neoprene is its amazing structure, which can create dramatic design detail, hold its shape when wearing, and give you the feeling of being “locked and loaded”, especially in more body con silhouettes. A drawback of the fabric is that although lightweight, it is technically a synthetic rubber {polychloroprene}, so it does not breathe extremely well, which can be uncomfortable in warmer months, or if you tend to get hot in your clothing.
I typically go for more breathable natural fabrications because I am ALWAYS hot, but since the Cali temps have been nice and cool, I decided to give the scuba dress a try, and I fell in love with the amazing detail on the neckline of this skater style.

I just recently bought this dress. If I didnt love it when I saw it on asos.com then I love it even more now! It is really light weight and so comfortable. I paired it with a light pink cardigan whitch made it really pop. It is so awesome to have such beautiful clothes for us plus sized women. We get to finally express our personalities and uniqueness while still staying in a budget!
Antonique, I totally agree with you!!! Plus size women have so many great options now! I bet your pink cardi looks SO cute with this dress! xo
You look beautiful in that dress. Love it!
Thank you William! xo
You look fab! Does this dress run true to size? I’ve never ordered anything from ASOS, but their sizing chart seems like it runs pretty big. Thanks!
Thank you Caite! ASOS runs true to size, and sometimes on the larger side, just depending on the cut/style of the item. xo
